Maybe a diaper that worked well for you or was fool-proof or a detergent that really kept stinkies at bay or a great nighttime solution? And what would you AVOID giving her that might turn her off for life?
Giveaway Winners Announced!
Congratulations winners!! Please be sure to contact debbyreed@gmail.com within 48 hours so I can give you information about how to claim your prize : )
I’d give them the cutest stinkin’ diaper out there, and I let friends borrow a bunch of our different kinds of diapers so they can see what works for them without dishing out cash! I also give friends a bag of Rockin’ Green!
I wouldn’t give them prefolds and rubber pants, lol! 🙂
A good diaper sprayer! Without mine, I may have given up on cloth with all the yucky poops!
I would give her a fabulous wet bag by brooke van gory designs because they’re a life saver and i would NOT give her anything with microsuede, because it holds the stinkies so horrifically.
sandra f. on fb
I would get my friend a diaper sprayer and a Katydid diaper. The diaper sprayer is a must have when the baby starts solids. I have recently fallen in love with Katydid Diapers.
I would give her a bag of rockin green DEFINANTLY! and i would steer clear of giving her the old fashioned pins and rubber pants! id def give her something more updated!
If a friend was starting cloth diapering I would give her a little starter/sample set which would include, a bumGenius 4.0, a Rumparooz, and a FuzziBunz, some Rockin’ Green a small wetbag and a package of disposable liners.
I would avoid giving her prefolds and covers, not that they aren’t great, but a lot of mama’s I’ve talked to seem put off by those but really attracted the to pocket diapers. I would want to show her how easy cloth diapering is.
I’d definitely have to suggest Clean B. Detergents to anyone that cloth diapers. It’s great at keeping stinkies out of ALL laundry.
I’d also remind that person that they’re doing the best thing they could do for the environment and their child(ren) by using cloth.
I only wish I had started sooner.
I would give a Softbums pack, makes diapering so easy for me, and basically foolproof! I would not TELL her the washing routine I do, iwould show her. It sounds so much more complicated than it is!
I would give KaWaii Baby diapers, because they are fantastic, and they make one that sizes down to 6 lbs. so they work even for tiny babies. Not to mention the are very affordable. I would not give a Bumkins cover on the other hand though, because I had such a terrible experience with them. That vent in the back is the worst Idea ever, and it caused me lots of extra laundry due to blowouts.
I can’t just pick one thing! Because, in my experience, so far, having a reliable newborn diaper (to avoid blowouts!) is a must. Also, making sure the detergent you are using is CD safe, because having stinky diapers is the pits! And last but definitely not least is a good overnight diaper! 🙂
BTW, congrats on 500!!
I would buy her some Rockin Green so she would never have a problem with stinkies. I would avoid giving cloth wipes as that might just be to overwhelming at first.
I would give a bag of Rockin Green and a Rumparooz diaper both my all time faves
I would get her flushable diaper liners! I used them when I was first learning to CD, and it really helped the transition from disposables to CDs when having to deal with a poopy diaper (especially for my husband!!).
I’m not really sure what would I would avoid giving her that might turn her off for life…but I probably wouldn’t give her MY favorite diaper, since it seems everyone ends up with their own personal preference!
For my friend who is going to have a baby soon, I would tell her which diapers I have had great succes with so far since I myself am new to cloth. And I would give her a diaper sprayer or wet bag which is a must have I have found, as I myself am in dire need of the diaper sprayer. And I would avoid giving her any hard to use diapers or ones that leak.
I would give a friend flushable liners. I would not give diapers with pins!
I’d give them something really easy to start with like an xsmall Bumgenius AIO-very newbie friendly. I would not give anything that requires pins! That is what everything thinks of when they hear cloth diaper.
I would have to say I would have to give a friend the Rockin Green Detergent. And just let her know that if you use your regular detergent on your CDs then you will get buildup and they could eventully leak and not do the job that they are suppossed to do. I would tell her just do cloth for one day and you will be hooked! I know I was. And don’t be afraid of the poop, just dunk or spray and wash and it will all come out in the wash!! Its amazing!!
I would give her chinese prefolds along with bummis covers and a pack of cloth wipes clothes pins to line dry them! I would also give her a large wetbag! I would not give her unwanted advise or make her feel pressured about cloth diapering! I would simply let her see how cute they are and suggest she try it part time!
I believe I would give them a few samples of Rockin Green, and a BumGenius 4.0 because that is my current favorite! Along with a demonstration!! I would not give a friend pre-folds, but only because I don’t get them, and I couldn’t show them how to do it.
I would probably give them an all in one diaper simply because they are the easiest and most like a disposable (especially if they are used to disposables already). I would give either a Thirsties Duo Diaper or a Happy Heinys (my two favorite — the Thirsties makes a great nighttime diaper).
I would not give her prefolds just because they take a little longer to get used to. My husband still does not like them and we are two months into cloth diapering. .
I would find the cutest diaper out there no matter the cost(well reasonable lol) and get it for her…I would also pick up a swim diaper…and a few wet bags 🙂
Congrats on the 500 🙂 Hope random.org likes me 🙂
I would get my friend a diaper sprayer for sure!! I would also make her some of my cashmere covers for night time so NO leaks!!
I would not get her a happy heiny’s diaper. We have found them to leak and be really droopy.
I’d give her a super cute and soft minky diaper. I know that once I felt minky, I knew I’d never go back to a paper diaper!
I would not give detergent however, as I find different brands work for different folks.
I would give her a Fuzzi Bunz and a Thirsties Duo dipe along with a wetbag. Since prefolds are the least expensive way to get started, I would give her some help using them. Once you get the hang of them, they are pretty slick!
I would not give anyone diaper rash cream… but show them ways to avoid it. I would also avoid aplix as now I curse the curled up and frayed edges that I fight with daily.
I’d give her something easy to use and reliable like a OS FuzziBunz pocket and a great wetbag. Oh, and a recipe for wipes solution!
I would definitely steer her away from starting off with prefolds/covers… maybe later on, but not to start with.
I would give her a Diaper sprayer because I know thats what I hope someone gives me. I wouldn’t give her diaper pins because they are a little scary.
A onesize aio would be a great gift. They last til potty training and work like a disposable! Also a diaper sprayer since everyone I talk to about cd says they won’t do it cuz of the poop.
I wouldn’t give Gdiapers to a chunky baby. My babies were long and chunky and those diapers cut into their bellies and hips.
I would give a diaper sprayer. They have helped me diaper a toddler much better and I think the toddler stage intimidates new cloth diapering people sometimes.
I would avoid giving bad or discouraging advice, such as insisting there is only one “right” diaper or diaper accessory to try or use.
I would give her a really cute, fuzzy, fitted, aplix. I would want it to go on really easy without trying to figure out snaps. I got OS snaps and was overwhelmed! Plus, I’d give her some Rockin Green and some Wooltopia Dryer Balls.
I’d avoid: prefolds and rubber pants. A lot of mamas (like me) can be turned off to the thought of that, because they think it’s really hard. Once they see how easy CD can be, they will be hooked!
I would probably give someone just starting out with cd’ing a nighttime wool soaker. I love mine, and have never had a nighttime leak with it. The only thing I can think of that I wouldn’t give would be an in-cloth diaper-friendly diaper rash cream. Number one, because she probably won’t need it, and number two, if her diapers started repelling, she’d probably give up cd’ing.
I would give them a Tiny Tush Elite pocket diaper. So squishy and soft! Also, some Crunchy Clean detergent.
I would give a friend that is just starting out with a newborn some thirsties duo diapers they are the only ones that we haven’t had a poop explosion with yet.
I would avoid giving them rockin green because it burned both my boys bottoms badly. Took them weeks to heal.
I would give her a gift certificate to her local store and go with her to take a look at all the different options. I was overwhelmed the first time I went and it would have been nice to have someone with me who could help explain the pros and cons of the different types of diapers.
I probaby wouldn’t give her any actual diapers, unless I could afford to get one of each kind or at least a couple of different kinds (prefold and cover, pocket, AIO, hybrid) since everyone has a favorite kind and I wouldn’t want her to feel stuck using what I liked.
I would give her a package of Flats… they are so versitile and even if she ended up settling on a different diaper system they would still come in handy to stuff pockets… use as doublers or many other uses around the house besides :c)
I actually like to lend them several things out of my stash so they can see what they like best. The only dipes I typically purchase as gifts are prefolds. It’s the only way to cost effectively buy someone a few days worth of diapering.
I would give a bumGenius one size diaper. I have tried lots of diapers and that is the best diaper for nighttime!
I would give her an applecheeks diaper. I would avoid giving her bulky diapers or anything that involves pins.
I would give her some BG diapers probably the 4.0 or an applecheek or RaR.
Would not give her prefolds
I would give her a fuzzibunz an applecheeks and a RaR -all with snaps…and some flushable liners and of course a bag of RnG!
I’d steer her clear of any aplix and the one diaper that really bothered me, because they gave my little one welts around his skinny little legs at 7 weeks old!!
I would give a diaper sprayer! That is a must have and a life saver IMO!
I would not give her pins, I would opt for snappies instead! Pins gave me anxiety before I knew about snappies! Lol!
I’d give them a super-cute AIO and some quick tips. I’d avoid pins and snappies until they’re hooked 🙂
I would give a new mama a size 1 Applecheeks with a small insert of some kind (maybe a LoopyDo). I would not give her prefolds, as they can be kind of overwhelming for someone who may not be completely sold on cloth diapering.
When my friend was expecting, I gave her a Bumgenius 3.0 (best husband-friendly diaper), a SuperDo (only thing that gets my daughter through the night), a Bummis Swimmi (they have a pool), a bag of Charlie’s soap, and a bunch of homemade flannel wipes. I wouldn’t have given her prefolds. Not that I think there’s anything wrong with them, I just never got the hang of using them so I wouldn’t have been any help to her. I use flats and did talk her into trying them and now she likes them, too!
I would give them a set of my favorite diapers and a travel wet bag. I would also make them a handmade laminated list of instructions on how to take care of them!
i would give her a sampler of the cutest wahm dipes out there. like a plump, a guerilla fluff, a bsrb and something bamboo velour. because once she sees how adorable they are and how adorable her baby will be in them she will never buy ugly, scratchy disposables again.
i’d give her a couple of different diapers to try out, a wet bag, a diaper sprayer and some lulu’s and homemade wool dryer balls. i’d also give her a couple of links to sites where the differences between all the different diapers are explained, how to wash and take care of them and a couple of online retailers.
i would not give her vinyl/rubber pants. they are noisy, uncomfortable and there’s nothing cute about ’em 🙂
thanks ottermama!!
I would give Rockin Green detergent. I would not give prefolds as a first diaper choice as they take more trial and error to get right.
I would be the friend on the recieving end since I am new to cloth lol! But I would give a diaper that works or some good soap to get the stinkies out:)
I’d give a diaper sprayer and a couple wet bags. One for the bathroom with the sprayer and the other for the diaper changing station.
I would not give plastic pants or unsafe diaper creams!
A diaper sprayer! It is great for cleaning up those poopy diapers
I would give them a diaper sprayer…I am not sure I would have stuck with it if it wasn’t for the sprayer!
Even though I personally love prefolds, I would not give them to a beginner. I did not love mine at first and remember thinking “Why do people love these??”
lets see I would give a friend starting out a AIO and a one size pocket. I think AIO’s are easy for someone starting out to make the transition.
I would avoid getting a fitted to start out because some people have a harder time with the need for a cover. Although I love my fitteds I know that they are not as super easy as AIO and pockets for a newbie
I would definitely give her a BG 4.0, aplix. The velcro is so easy and the closest to a sposie that it’s fail proof. I would throw in a hemp insert and she would be set for nighttime too! Oh, and definitely a wetbag… 😉
I cannot, cannot, cannot master prefolds with my squirmy daughter, so I would definitely not show her those!
lindseygalvez at gmail dot com
Indian or Chinese prefolds, Bummis covers and a couple of Snappis. I would avoid bulky AIO’s that take forever to dry and tend to get stinky! And I would advise them on doing extra rinses when washing the diapers to prevent buildup!
I would give them a BG Aplix AIO with Bummis flushable liners. Prefolds can seem tricky in the beginning and an AIO seems simple, now I don’t use them as much because it takes longer for them to dry and I prefer snaps more so to aplix. Aplix would be easier switching from disposables, since that’s what most people are used to and then they can get into snaps later. As far as detergent, it would be Lulu’s. Lulu’s works great and is not as expensive as the other brands. No one wants to pay $20 for detergent, no matter how well it works. You are cloth diapering partly to save money, too for most people. I would also recommend a prewash with a half a cup of vinegar.
I am trying to talk my friend due in Feb. to use cloth.
A bag of Rockin’ Green detergent and stay away from the pin up diapers and the rubber ones!!
Diaper sprayer and wet bag!!! I would also let her borrow from my stash:)
Being new to CD (just started in the last month) I’m finding it interesting to read everyones comments so I know what I should maybe invest in and what to skip myself.
I would give a variety of different dipes, and a bag of Rockin Green, a Wet bag, and a diaper sprayer! I think those are great things to get started!!!
I would avoid giving homemade detergents or Charlies.. they all caused me so much grief!
I’d give them some AIO’s and a diaper sprayer.
I’d avoid complicated diapers or anything that requires too much thought the first month or so =)
I would give her some super cute newborn AI2’s 🙂 KLB just came out with some adorable ones so I would buy those for her. Because I firmly believe what works for one might not for another, I would suggest anything! There is nothing about cloth diapering that I would avoid giving 🙂
I try to give all my preggo friends cloth wipes and Kissaluv’s Diaper Lotion Potion concentrate. Even if they don’t cloth diaper it is SUPER easy to use the Otter Babies wipes and wash them with the rest of the baby clothes.
I would never give an unseasoned cloth diaper mama pins. Maybe a Snappi but never pins!
I’m putting together a kit with laundry care (detergent samples, mostly), pail depderizers, and doublers. My friend has been buying diapers and these are things that were afterthoughts for me. As for what NOT to do when helping friends get started…I don’t know! I think just giving too much info too quickly can overwhelm people and make them think they can’t do it.
I would probably buy a good detergent like Rockin’ Green or Lulus!
I’d give (and have given) my friend some Rockin’ Green Detergent and Magic Stick ointment along with borrowing my newborn stash if I wasn’t using it.
I would give her some BG AIO’s and some Bummis flushable liners! Two things that make cloth incredibly easy!
I’d give my friend some adorable AIO that will fit her new baby well – and tell her all about the flip and grovia diapers that use inserts!
Covers and prefolds. I was so tired of Stuffing and about to give up when I started covers with prefolds or inserts.
Even though I’m brand new to cloth diapering and haven’t technically started (still waiting on little man to arrive!) I would probably give someone some wipes. It seems that using cloth wipes would make things easier when you are cloth diapering so you don’t have to have 2 different places to keep “dirty” items. I would definitely not give someone diaper pins! Instead maybe some snappis 🙂
I’d give her a bag of rock’n’green, a one-size fuzzi bunz and 12 quilter’s nappies velour/velour wipes! (plus instructions on how to make a wipe solution!)
a soft bum & maybe my dog-food-container-turned-wet-pail if she has an HE washer. the wet pail really helped with the HE washing issue
I’d give her some easy-to-use AIO’s to get her hooked! And Rockin’ Green detergent. 🙂
I’d give her a good pocket diaper with some hemp soakers for overnight…and DEFINITELY a couple of wet bags.
I’d tell her to avoid buying an expensive diaper sprayer right off because she won’t need it until much later, and she could make one from the hardware store for cheaper.
ID give a cloth newbie a Bag of Rockin Green, some fitteds and prefolds. Fitteds and prefolds are so easy for new borns and last forever, Im still useing alll of the NB prefolds I have as boosters, and some times burp clothes.
Now if she was starting a bit late in the game Id give her some OS pockets and AIO. 🙂
I would give Northern Essence Better Butt-er Cream. It has worked miracles on my son!
I would give a friend a gift basket full of ONE of a bunch of brands/types of diapers. That way, she won’t stock up on only one brand or type of diaper and then realize a month or so down the road that they aren’t working for her. So, a gift basket will give her the chance to check out all her options and then make a choice, she could get rid of the ones she doesn’t like and use the $$ to stock up on more of what she does!! And, I’m not sure what I would avoid giving a friend… Bad advice? Lol
I’d give them a diaper sprayer and some RnG
I would give a hybrid diaper during the day and several pocket/AIO’s for night time use.
This is easy, because I am actually putting together a gift basket for a friend who is expecting! I got her a medium wetbag, some Fuzzibunz, a GroVia AIO, some Rockin’ Green, and some wipes! I am hoping to get even more for her!
I would give them a diaper gift bag 🙂 including Rockin’ Green, a sprayer, a wet bag and some AIOs to start off easy.. I would never give anything that you would have to pin… not fun when you’ve got a baby squirming around at 5 am!
I would give my friend an Applecheeks starter kit…or a bag of Lulu’s!
I would not give her…disposables?
I would give a hybrid diaper – I know a lot of Mamas have used them as a “gateway” diaper to cloth. I wouldn’t give flats – they are intimidating at first with all the folds!
I would give prefolds, flushable liners and a Flip cover.
We found this combo has contained every mess so far. We have since stopped using liners, but they make clean up stress free for the stressful first few weeks.
I would avoid giving small sized pocket diapers. As cute as they may be, they are difficult to stuff, and are prone to compression leaks.
If a friend were just starting out, I would probably give her a diaper sprayer and all the info I gathered on my own quest to start cloth diapering. I would not recommend her by a huge stash of any one diaper until she figured out what she likes 🙂
I’d give her some prefolds and cute newborn covers. no wool, nit just yet. the maintenance for someone who is just having her first baby is a little much. thanks for the chance!
libby dot bloom dot hunt at gmail dot com
I would probably give her some of the CJ’s BUTTer since we just discovered it or maybe some Rockin’ Green Detergent!
I would give her a good diaper sprayer and some good laundering advice, I would avoid giving her anything that requires pins and no diapers with Velcro!
I would let her try one of everything in my stash- so she could find out what works best for her and her baby; and what doesn’t. I’d add on some Rockin’ Green, and a fabulous wet bag! Along with a detailed explanation about how to wash the diapers… took me a lot of researching the internet and asking friends to find out the best way, I’d want to save her the time- and get her off on a non-stinky start!
I think I would give them some Rockin Green and also some Charlies All purpose Cleaner. Rg for the stinkies and Charlies APC for the dipe stains!
I would give her a FB one size, a medium sized wet bag, and some lucky girl laundry detergent http://www.etsy.com/shop/LuckyGirlBoutique?ref=seller_info it’s cloth diaper safe and the only one to keep not only the stinkies but the stains away.
I would have her avoid pins and gerber prefolds. Well that and anything else that was beyond her husband’s abilities.
I actually am compiling a pile for my preggy new-to-cloth sis-in-law! Newborn diapers (Lil Joeys, BG xs, Luvabum), one-size (Fuzzibunz, Flip, and more), and I plan to add to that – Lulu’s in the Fluff detergent, a wet bag, flannel wipes, fleece liners, and Earth Mama Angel Baby diaper balm. Hope to get a diaper liner too.
I plan to give her a tutorial and would try to give that to anyone new-to-cloth — a good introduction to how to cloth diaper, and an intro to the various diapering systems and what kind of preferences and lifestyles they fit.
As far as what not to get — unless they have indicated interest, I would stay away from fitted, prefolds, and other more complicated systems. It was about a month or two before I was brave enough to try a prefold, and even though it’s easy now, it’s intimidating for those who have only done “AIO” disposables. However, I would give them a demo during the tutorial and show how to use a snappi. I would also discourage them from buying all of one brand, or cheap brands, until they have done their research (pointing them to diaper pin and “dirty diaper laundry” reviews ) and have given that diaper a trial run (with that in mind, I’m trying out cheap brands myself to see to recommend or warn against).
Whew, that was long. sorry…. 🙂
I would give her a cute wet bag and some rockin’ green for sure. Also I would get her a set of cloth wipes and a cute wool cover.
khaymax at hotmail dot com
this is hard, because I’m the newbie!! lol, but I would do what was done for me, give an assortment of different types, and let them choose the diapering system that works for them! and lots of support!!!!
I wouldn’t give them … well not sure honestly, lol! as i said I’m just now getting my feet wet!! but i wouldn’t let them “go it alone!!”
hmmm, my “kit” is quickly getting out-of-hand! 🙂
If money was no object, I would give a newbie:
a gDiaper sweet bundle or new baby bundle w/flushies
3 little gPant 2-packs (for extra color/cuteness)
6 packs of gCloth inserts
a 6-pack of snap-in liners
a case of gWipes
a gCycle tee set or gDarling dress set
a gTote (to carry it all!)
3 goodmama good.nights! or newborns diapers (for nights)
4 dozen goodmama wipes
2 goodmama hanging pail wet bags
2 goodmama medium wet bags
2 goodmama small wet bags
a diaper sprayer
a nice diaper table (that will work as a book/toy shelf later)
a contoured changing pad
a Boppy Changing Pad Set
a 3-pack of Boppy Changing Pad Liners
6 fabric cubes (for organising the diaper table)
a soft cushion for the diaper table
a wipe warmer
a Classic Rock Bundle in Bare Naked Baby
4 wool dryer balls
As for what I would avoid … under NO circumstances would I try to convince a newbie to use pins!
I’d have to agree with giving them a cute diaper. I am new to cloth (officially starting when baby is born in a few weeks) and the thing that get me noticing cloth to begin with was how cute it was!
I have no idea what I wouldnt give them, as I haven’t tried anything yet! I did see someone say pins, which is a good thing to see. I am terrified of pins and would freak if I thought I had to use them! LOL!
I would start her out with some good prefolds first to make sure she liked them, then on to some fitted diaper. I would supply her with a bunch of my CD laundry soap, stain sticks and some castile soap for making baby wipe solution & for gently washing. I would make her some salve for dipe rashes too. I would throw in some cloth wipes too. I would avoid scented stuff for at least 6 months though.
I have a friend who I would LOVE to see cloth diaper, but she is SO squeamish. She has 2 kids already and about ready to have a third, and wants more after that! I would love to get her a diaper sprayer if I could because I think that she would get a LOT of use out of it! I would never get her prefolds, because I think she would find it too much work, AIOs would be the way she would go!
I would give her some easy pocket diapers – my favourites are Happy Heinys. They’re easy to use and won’t scare her off. I would not tell her about prefolds and covers just yet, I’d let her get used to cloth diapering before I showed her all the options.
Oh and OF COURSE I would get her a diaper sprayer, that really goes without saying because really, it is such a great thing :-).
Vered
I would give her some RaRs, BG, and Kawaiis. I would also give her some detergent.
I wouldn’t give her Thirsties. Those almost ruined it for me.
I would give her a BG 4.0. I really love these new diapers, and they are so much like disposables that I think a newbie would like them too.
I would not give her diaper pins. I never could get them to work. They were the cause of much cloth diapering frustration for me.
I’d give a new momma a rumparooz b/c they grow with baby and a soaker&wetbag.
i used the gdiapers but wouldn’t give the to a friend b/c I think the rumparooz work alot better and you can stick with one size. i wouldnt get into prefolds and all that jazz cause its enough info to scare anyone off! lol
I would give some of my favorites: Nifty Nappy diapers. They’re OS & adjustable!
I wouldn’t give pins or plastic pants. yikes!!
I would give probably some fitteds and covers. Or a diaper sprayer. 🙂
I would give her any kind of modern diaper. And some Rockin green in a delicious sent 🙂 I would avoid old school prefolds, pins, and plastic pants I tried them and wow. My hat it off the the older crowd for ever getting these to work!
I would give her RnG and maybe a gift certificate to the website that does the trials ( I forget the name) and would NOT give her pins…they made me curse!
I would give her support and LuLus detergent stinky diapers are bad. I would not give her a hard time if she just couldn’t handle it.
I would give some pockets or fitteds and covers. I would avoid prefolds at first because most people I talk to think prefolds are to old fashioned. But then after a couple months I would break out the prefolds!
I would start her off with a Bummis cover and some organic cotton prefolds. And, of course, she must have a zippered wet bag. What I would not give her is disposable diapers!
I would give her a super cute tie-dyed or something fun print diaper preferably in velcro but snaps would be fine too. I would also love the diaper to be one that you don’t have to take out the insert but wasn’t an AIO. Would also give a sample of Rockin’ Green because who doesn’t love those awesome scents?
I wouldn’t give her a poopy diaper because somethings just should be left for the imagination! : )
Thanks for the giveaway and congrats on reaching 500!
I’d have to give her three things: A gdiaper, a wet bag, and a diaper sprayer. Not sure what I wouldn’t give, because I really haven’t found anything that I hate 🙂 Oh yeah, I wouldn’t give her Pampers with dry max. 🙂
I would give my friend cloth wipes and cubes and some preemie prefolds (indian unbleached) and a couple of cute covers to start her off…
I wouldn’t give them disposables..
I would most certainly give a diaper sprayer. I don’t think I would cloth diaper without it. When I tell people I use cloth and they give me that “you’re crazy” look, I feel like I have to explain modern cloth to them. One thing I point out is that I never dip my hands into the toilet. I think the thought of that is a major turn off to potential cloth diapering parents (especially dads). I would also give a few AIO’s or pockets to get them started. AIO’s aren’t any different than putting on a sposie so they might seem less intimidating to newbies.
I would give her Bummis covers and pre-folded diapers to use with them. I love Bummis. I would also give her a jar of my homemade laundry detergent that works great on dirty dipes. Free Refills too! I wouldn’t give her a lecture on why cloth is better than sposies.
I’d make her a “Welcome to Cloth Diapering” basket–in it I would put: a bumgenius 3.0, a pixie poppits OS, a babykicks OS,2 lollidoo’s, an ittybittybums AI2, a babyland OS, a diaper pail liner, Tree Huggin’ Design Cloth wipes, a wet bag, and a diaper sprayer.
I wouldn’t give her any excuses/reasons to NOT do cloth diapering—it’s fantastic!
I’d give an AppleCheeks diaper and some small bags of Lulu’s in the Fluff and Charlie’s Soap for her to try… plus a wet bag!
I would give her a rumparooz diaper in a cute print or color like gumball and some cleanB detergent that smells wonderful and cleans diapers wonderful!
I definitely wouldn’t tell them how to wash the diapers either, I would rather show them so that they don’t get turned off by how complicated it sounds.
I’d give them a pile of unbleached flats, a link to a YouTube video on how to fold them, a couple snappis and a cover with snaps (either Booroi or Thirsties Duo).
i would give an AIO like a BG. I would avoid prefolds cause for us they are tougher
I’d give her a “loaner” of each of the many different diapers I’ve used (I have over 150 CD’s at last count…I can share, LOL. Ones I bought, and ones I made). And I’d over to let her practise on my son before baby came if she wanted.
I’m not sure what I’d avoid. I’ve tried lots of different things and haven’t really disliked any….I know, I’d avoid giving her one of the first 5 diapers I made myself. Those 5 leaked like sieves, but the rest worked. (I was new to the whole PUL think and puncture holes).
I would give her a few prefolds, a couple Thirsties covers, a fleece cover for overnight/naps,a pack of cheap washcloths to use for diaper wipes, some Northern Essence diaper salve, a Snappi, and a wet bag! Just to show her that she need not spend a huge amount of money to start cloth diapering!
I would give them a all in one pocket diaper they seem to work the best for most people. I have been using Charlies Soap and it seems to be working great for us so I would suggest they try that as well or some Rockin Green. I would def suggest getting a good wet bag and some sort of garbage pail or a diaper champ to keep the smell in and out of your house. I have heard great things about diaper sprayers and I would love to get one but its just not in our budget right now but I would def tell them to get one!
If I had a friend I was going to get started on cloth diapering, I would give her a starter kit of the following:
OS Fuzzibunz, OS Happy Heinys, OS Bumgenius, Thirsties Duo(size 1 or 2 depending on how big the child was), 2 wet bags(medium and large), and a good detergent(Rockin Green or Charlie’s Soap)
I would not give her prefolds and pins, wouldn’t want to stick the baby.
I would give a diaper with snaps like an Applecheeks or Baby Kanga…and I don’t know what I would avoid…except maybe velcro diapers? 🙂
I would give her a super simple pocket diaper or all-in-one + some Lulu’s in the Fluff! 🙂 I would NOT give her fleece liners… I’ve tried those, and the poop just clings, clings, clings!
I’d have a hard time picking one thing, but a diaper sprayer would be near the top. Is that weird? I’d probably also say a good AIO to show them how easy CDing can be.
I seriously have been looking into sprayers! To bad you were out while I had the money. lol Just started cloth diapering and love my one size all in ones.
